Civil Technology

Civil engineering is equally important in all public and private sectors. Civil engineering is one of the oldest major disciplines of engineering. In 1747, the first engineering educational institution was established in France, named “The National School of Bridges and Highways”. A true engineer was called “John Smeaton”. These civil engineers had to plan the construction of all kinds of structures in the city, planned water supply and sewerage systems, planned railways and highways. In 1828, the Institution of Civil Engineers was started in England for the welfare of the world’s first engineering society. Engineering has been an integral part of life since the dawn of human civilization. Architecture is believed to have started from the ancient Egyptian civilization to the Mesopotamian civilization (ancient Iraq) between 4000 and 2000 BC, just when people felt the need to build dwellings for their living. The main subject that is taught here is mechanics, apart from that, you want to have a good grip on drawing, designing. The main branches of civil engineering are four- I. Structural Engineering, II. Transportation Engineering, III. Geotechnical Engineering, IV. Besides Environmental Engineering, Water Resource Engineering can also be called a branch of Civil Engineering. The importance of civil engineer is increasing with time. Almost all public and private engineering universities in Bangladesh have the opportunity to study civil engineering.

Civil Engineering Objectives and Aims

Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline in the world. The work of a civil engineer is mainly engaged in the work of a structural engineer for the construction of high-rise buildings and bridges for movement.

Transportation Engineering deals with the construction of the roads we travel on, the safety of various types of vehicles on the roads, and their dynamics.

Soil is dealt with in this section. Buildings that are built tall have their foundations underground. This foundation must be strong and load bearing. This foundation has to be made in such a way that even if there is an earthquake, the building will not settle or fall. This subject is taught within Geotechnical Engineering.

Environmental engineering is very important work in civil engineering. Research is done against any environmental pollution in this matter. All the subjects that should be taught in order to ensure that people have access to clean water at home fall under the field of ecology. There is another important subject, which is called Water Resource Engineering. Topics like construction of dams, flood and drought control, distribution of water required for crops in different seasons are taught in this department.

An important fundamental factor for infrastructure construction is its construction cost. A challenge for 21st century engineers is figuring out how to make complex designs cost-effective while maintaining the beauty of the exterior of the infrastructure. Not only should the cost be kept low, but the structure should be made with high durability by using good raw materials at low cost. Within this cost, however, the cost of maintenance and renovation after building the structure should also be included.
