The Diploma of Engineering Studies aims to provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in English; a sound knowledge of basic engineering, scientific, computing and mathematical techniques; a knowledge of, and ability to apply, basic problem solving techniques; and basic knowledge and skills in one of the following fields: civil engineering; computer systems engineering; electrical and electronic engineering; environmental engineering; geographic information systems; mechanical engineering; mechatronic engineering or surveying and many more engineering/vocational/technical subjects.

Mid level engineering education program offered in 41 government Polytechnic institutes and 4 specialized institutes under the academic Supervision of Bangladesh Technical Education Board in 28 different technological areas. A diploma in engineering teaches a student all the fundamental concepts of engineering, all specialized fields such as electrical engineering, electronics engineering, civil engineering, and computer and IT engineering. Following are the Purpose of BTEB:

  • Develop and prescribe courses off all curriculums.
  • Arrange for development of learning materials.
  • Grant recognition to education institutions offering its courses.
  • Prescribe conditions governing admission of students.
  • Monitor the teaching-learning activities.
  • Hold, conduct and regulate examination of affiliated institutions.
  • Award diplomas and certificates to the successful candidates.
In 1960 the Directorate of technical Education was established for development of technical and vocational education. The Directorate of Technical Education initiated rapid development and expansion works of degree, diploma and trade level technical education in the country.

To cope up with increasing magnitude of academic activities, the need for establishment of a “Statutory Board” was keenly felt. A statutory body namely “The East Pakistan Technical Education Board” was established through Act. No. 1 of 1967 of the then East Pakistan Assembly, which is how Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).

Thus the Bangladesh Technical Education Board came into existence with the jurisdiction over the entire area of Bangladesh to organize, supervise, regulate, control and develop technical and vocational education. The Board in its present form became operative with effect form June 1969.
